Background of the study
Industrial activities have escalated air pollution levels in many urban areas, with Eleme Local Government Area experiencing significant environmental stress. Emissions from factories, refineries, and other industrial processes contribute to high concentrations of particulate matter and toxic gases. This environmental challenge is directly linked to a range of respiratory and cardiovascular health issues among residents (Ibrahim, 2023). The continuous exposure to pollutants has been associated with increased hospital admissions and long-term health complications, urging the need for a comprehensive study on its impacts (Chukwu, 2024). In recent years, researchers have emphasized the importance of monitoring air quality and implementing strict regulatory measures to protect public health (Okechukwu, 2025). Although some policies have been enacted, enforcement remains inconsistent, and residents still face high risks of chronic illnesses. The integration of community-based monitoring and advanced technological interventions offers a promising approach to mitigating these impacts. Thus, this study seeks to evaluate the correlation between industrial air pollution and adverse health outcomes, providing a critical basis for enhanced regulatory frameworks and community health interventions (Uche, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Residents in Eleme Local Government Area are increasingly affected by air pollution resulting from industrial activities. High levels of toxic emissions have been linked to a rise in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Current regulations and monitoring systems have failed to provide adequate protection, leaving residents vulnerable to chronic health problems. The economic burden on public health services is also growing, necessitating urgent policy reform and intervention (Akinola, 2024).
