Background of the study
Industrial activities have escalated air pollution levels in many urban areas, with Eleme Local Government Area experiencing significant environmental stress. Emissions from factories, refineries, and other industrial processes contribute to high concentrations of particulate matter and toxic gases. This environmental challenge is directly linked to a range of respiratory and cardiovascular health issues among residents (Ibrahim, 2023). The continuous exposure to pollutants has been associated with increased hospital admissions and long-term health complications, urging the need for a comprehensive study on its impacts (Chukwu, 2024). In recent years, researchers have emphasized the importance of monitoring air quality and implementing strict regulatory measures to protect public health (Okechukwu, 2025). Although some policies have been enacted, enforcement remains inconsistent, and residents still face high risks of chronic illnesses. The integration of community-based monitoring and advanced technological interventions offers a promising approach to mitigating these impacts. Thus, this study seeks to evaluate the correlation between industrial air pollution and adverse health outcomes, providing a critical basis for enhanced regulatory frameworks and community health interventions (Uche, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Residents in Eleme Local Government Area are increasingly affected by air pollution resulting from industrial activities. High levels of toxic emissions have been linked to a rise in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Current regulations and monitoring systems have failed to provide adequate protection, leaving residents vulnerable to chronic health problems. The economic burden on public health services is also growing, necessitating urgent policy reform and intervention (Akinola, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To examine the levels of industrial air pollutants in Eleme.
  • To assess the health impacts on local residents.
  • To propose regulatory measures for improved air quality management.

Research questions

  • What is the extent of industrial air pollution in Eleme?
  • How does air pollution affect the health of residents?
  • What policy interventions can effectively reduce industrial air pollutants?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Industrial activities significantly increase the levels of air pollutants.
  • H2: There is a direct correlation between air pollution levels and respiratory health issues.
  • H3: Strengthening regulatory measures will reduce the adverse health effects of air pollution.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the direct link between industrial air pollution and public health. It aims to guide policymakers in formulating stricter air quality standards and improving public health interventions, thus safeguarding residents and reducing healthcare burdens.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the effect of air pollution from industrial activities on residents’ health in Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State.

Definitions of terms

  • Air pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the atmosphere that endanger human health and the environment.
  • Industrial activities: Manufacturing and other operations that release pollutants into the air.
  • Respiratory health: The functioning and well-being of the lungs and respiratory system.
